We caught up with talented actress & Greenhouse member Marianne Haaland, who has been spending her time in Los Angeles and Miami as of late. We had all the pressing questions…
How did you get your start in your creative discipline?
I grew up as a missionary kid in Madagascar and lived at a boarding school. There, we would put on plays for the parents twice a year, and it ignited a spark in me that’s never left! I always felt I could express myself and explore new feelings while doing theatre, which was such a gift to me while growing up.
What projects have you worked on that you are most proud of?
Producing and starring in Birdie’s Song was “my first” film, and I overcame many challenges and big firsts. I’m really proud of it. I’m also proud of booking a large recurring guest star role on Season 3 of the TV show, Vindication, coming to Pure Flix in September 2023.
What is your dream project? Why?
My dream project would be to collaborate on a movie musical! The rehearsals and the passion you have while working on a musical are second to none!
What inspires you creatively?
I’m inspired by content that makes me feel lighter and brighter after watching it. Whether it’s funny or redemptive, I want to feel more hopeful than I came in to it!
What, in your opinion, is the most important thing for a creative professional to know?
A creative professional should know that time passes anyway – find something that brings you joy through the journey. If you truly love this, then you should be in it for the long haul. That’s where most success lies, anyway!
What role has risk played in your life and career?
Risk! It’s all been a risk! Moving to the U.S. (I’m from Norway) was a risk. Moving to L.A. was another risk. Living on an actor’s salary when you aren’t booking anything is a risk. I’m thankful to have a strong faith in God that’s kept me sane through all the ups and down. It also helps to have a supportive husband with a steady job because this business is not easy to survive on!
What one or two personal character traits have served you best in your creative endeavors, and which have been the most challenging?
I’m tenacious. I could have given up easily a long time ago. But I’m not giving up. I also have a lot of hope, which has kept me going through the tough times. One thing I wish I had more of was a business sense. I think all actors should take a business and marketing class!
What movie can you watch (& enjoy) repeatedly?
I really like watching limited series, and I love being immersed in a good story, so I’m not much of a re-watcher. But I have enjoyed rewatching Downton Abbey and Ted Lasso.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
If I could have one superpower it would be to have all my loved ones in one place all together. My heart is scattered all over the world and it would be great to not have to miss anyone! (And obviously end world hunger and have peace on earth too.)
